What is a pressure sore?
Pressure sores can occur when our body is in continuous contact with a surface. They are particularly common in people who are bedbound or use a wheelchair and do not have sufficient mobility to move their body themselves. This causes pressure to develop which restricts blood flow to the area of the body that is in contact with the surface. These patients are dependent upon nurses and care workers to move them to prevent pressure sores developing.
What are the symptoms?
Pressure sores, which are also sometimes referred to as pressure ulcers or bedsores, can range from mild to severe. At the milder end of the scale the patient’s skin can become red and tender. In more serios cases their skin tissue can die, leaving muscles and tendons exposed and infected.
Where do pressure sores occur?
The sore will arise wherever the body is in constant contact with a surface. Typically this will be the patient’s back, posterior, shoulders, hips heels, and ankles.
When can pressure sore compensation be claimed?
Pressure sore compensation can be claimed where healthcare professionals in hospitals and care homes fail to take reasonable steps to prevent a pressure sore developing, or fail to take action to stop a pressure sore from deteriorating and causing avoidable pain and discomfort.
Patients need to be continuously monitored and moved to prevent pressure sores. If this is not done and injury occurs then the patient may be entitled to make a pressure sore compensation claim.
