What is a stroke?
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is cut off, either by a blockage in the blood vessel (known as an ischemic stroke) or a bleed in the brain (known as a haemorrhage).
According to the Stroke Association, an individual suffers a stroke every 5 minutes in the UK. In the UK, strokes are the leading cause of death, accounting for 75% of deaths.
How is a stroke recognised?
A stroke can be identified by the following:
- FAST acronym: Facial weakness, Arm weakness, Speech problems, and Time to call 999.
- Headache
- Confusion
- Dizziness
- Difficulty swallowing
- Double vision
It is good practice to make yourself aware of the signs of a stroke, especially the FAST test, as with strokes being so common you never know when you may be in the presence of someone having a stroke and acting quickly could make a massive difference to that person’s outcome.
What are the causes of a stroke?
Strokes can be caused by various factors, including:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Uncontrolled atrial fibrillation
Treatment
If you have been diagnosed the following treatment plans may be offered, depending on your situation:
- Thrombolysis – an infusion to break up the clot that is blocking the artery
- Thrombectomy – an operation to remove the blood clot from an artery in the brain.
Why is time important?
If a person is suffering from a stroke, diagnosis and treatment must be performed swiftly, as delays can have a devastating impact, such as an increased chance of brain damage or death.
