Over 7,500 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the UK every year. With a five-year survival rate of only 50.8%, ovarian cancer is one of the most common causes of death for women. Although there are no known ways to prevent most ovarian cancers, there are things that can be done to lower the risk, or catch the cancer at an earlier stage.
Anything that stops ovulation for a while can help to prevent ovarian cancer such as, pregnancy, birth control or breastfeeding. However, it is widely accepted that the focus needs to be on catching the disease earlier to increase the survival rate. Noticing symptoms such as bloating, pain or tenderness in your tummy or area between your hips and pelvis, having no appetite or feeling full fast, the urgent need to urinate, losing weight, and feeling tired all the time.
A study carried out by researchers at the University of Birmingham asked 1,741 women to be fast tracked for treatment under the symptom-triggered testing rapid access pathway. The results of the study found that the test could pick up early-stage aggressive ovarian cancer in 1 in 4 women. Once diagnosed, the women were able to have surgery to remove the cancer and this was successful in over three quarters of the cases. The study worked by allowing women who were suffering with some of the symptoms to be expedited for the test.
